Lip Flip vs Lip Lift: Let’s Break Down the Difference

Addressing concerns around your lips is not a one-size-fits-all approach. There are various ways to achieve your desired goal, including a lip flip and a lip lift. While the names sound similar, the targeted results are different. So, before you schedule one or the other, it is important to go over the difference between a lip flip vs lip lift

Here is what you need to know about the two treatments and how each can help you achieve specific lip goals:

What is a Lip Lift?

A lip lift is a bit different from a traditional filler or injection. Instead, this is a minimally-invasive procedure that is performed under local anesthesia (in some instances it may require full sedation, although this is rarely the case).

Instead of using a hyaluronic acid filler, which is an injectable that pumps up the volume of your lips, a lip lift will change the general appearance of your lips by addressing more than the vermilion border. Most fillers volumize where the reddish-toned tissue of your lips meets your skin. A lip lift focuses on the area between the lips and the nose, the philtrum. The enhancement is due to reducing the distance between your lips and your nose, which gives your lips a fuller, plumper look.

In order to achieve the desired look, a small amount of tissue is removed from the area just under your nose (which is what can cause your top lip to push upward). Once the procedure is done, you will have fuller-looking lips.

When a Lip Lift is Best

Not everyone is going to be a candidate for a lip lift. A lip lift is performed when there is a large amount of space between the top lift and the nose. It has very little to do with the thickness of your lips. You may have especially thin lips, but if the space between the top lip and your nose is minimal, a lip lift will likely not be the best course of action. But not to worry, because even if you are not a candidate for a lip lift, HA fillers can still be used to plump up your lips. The best way to determine if a lip lift is right for you is to schedule a consultation.

What is a Lip Flip?

Unlike a lip lift, a lip flip is nonsurgical, skipping the need for an incision and instead taking advantage of injections.

A lip flip should not be confused with lip filler of HA injections either. While the HA (hyaluronic acid) injection is used to plump up and boost the volume of the lips, a lip flip is performed by carefully placing a small amount of muscle relaxing injectables such as Botox, Dysport, Jeuveau, or Xeomin at specific points above the top lip allowing more to show making lips appear fuller. (the specific injection selected is determined by any allergies you may suffer from and whether or not your skin has reacted to injectable in the past).

An injectable such as Botox is used to target muscles around the top of the lip. This will relax these muscles and, in turn, cause the upper lip to push, or “flip” outward. By doing this, you’re not actually adding any size or volume to the lips, but instead, you’re giving the illusion of fuller lips.

A lip flip can also reduce the vertical lip lines (you may have heard them referred to as “bar code lines” in the past), which is something many experience as they age.

When a Lip Flip is Best

One of the main benefits of a lip flip is there isn’t any downtime. Unlike a lip lift, which does require a minor cosmetic procedure, a lip flip can be done in just a few minutes.

This is a great option for anyone that doesn’t necessarily want to increase the size of their lips, but instead, they want a simple improvement to the contour of their lips. This is also a great option for those with wider smiles.

Plenty of Lip Options To Choose From

There are all kinds of lip options and treatments to choose from. If you’re interested in plumping up your lips, a traditional HA injection may be right for your needs. On the other hand, if you want to achieve an illusion of plumper lips without actually increasing the size of your lips, a lip flip may be the kind of service you should take advantage of. Or, if you have a larger space between your top lip and your nose, a lip lift could be something you should consider.

Because there are so many different lip services available to you the best way to determine what will work best for you is to schedule an in-person consultation. You may have your sights set on one particular service but then discover something else will work better.

There are times when combining multiple services together may be optimal as well. It is possible to take advantage of HA injections as well as the muscle-relaxing Botox injections around your lips. Whether this is your first time considering any kind of lip work, or if you have had other treatments performed in the past, there’s never been a better time to schedule an in-person consultation with our team here at The Skin Center By CPS than right now.
