Kybella Treatment in Charlotte NC
Many people desire a more sculpted jawline and chin area. Kybella® is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment that reduces fat under the chin. If you are looking for Kybella® in Charlotte, NC, then The Skin Center Charlotte Plastic Surgery is your go-to place.
Submental fullness can impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women, and can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
What is Kybella®?
Kybella® is a nonsurgical cosmetic injectable used to reduce fat beneath the chin. The FDA-approved injections are a treatment for submental fullness. It contours and improves the appearance of moderate to severe submental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin.”
Submental fullness can also impact a broad range of adults, including both men and women. Besides, it can be influenced by several factors such as aging, genetics, and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
The procedure involves a series of deoxycholic acid injections, a naturally occurring molecule that can help break down and absorb fat cells. When injected into subcutaneous fat, Kybella® eliminates fat cells. Once eliminated, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.
What to Expect During Kybella® Treatment
Before the Kybella® injection, your provider will take a marker and mark the injection sites. To prevent pain, your provider may also administer ice or a topical numbing agent to prevent discomfort and pain.
Usually, your provider will do between 20 and 50 injections. The deoxycholic acid gradually eliminates the fat cells, which are then metabolized by the body.
Since Kybella® is nonsurgical, there are no incisions, and most people experience no downtime. The results gradually emerge over the next six weeks following your treatment.
While the procedure is generally well-tolerated, like any treatment, it has potential side effects. Some people experience mild discomfort during and in the next couple of days following the treatment. Mild bruising for a few days is also common. Icing the injection site can help any bruises heal faster. Also, avoid alcohol, blood thinners such as aspirin, and vigorous workouts for the next day or two. Talk with your provider about specific recommendations tailored to your needs.
The most common side effects are swelling, numbness, redness, and the formation of small areas of firmness around the treatment area. In rare cases, Kybella® can cause serious side effects, including trouble swallowing and nerve injury in the jaw that can cause an uneven smile or facial muscle weakness.
While everyone is different, most people need multiple Kybella® sessions to achieve their desired results. Some may only need one treatment, while others may need up to six treatment sessions. Each session may last approximately 20 minutes.
You may receive as many as six treatments spaced at least one month apart. Since it can take six weeks before seeing the full results, you may prefer to wait for at least six weeks before getting another injection.
Who is a Good Candidate for Kybella®?
Since Kybella® is generally well tolerated, most adults who want to get rid of a double chin are good candidates for the treatment. Some other criteria include:
- You are at least 18 years old
- You have moderate or more severe amounts of fat beneath the chin
- You are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- If you have had or are planning to have facial surgery, discuss it with your provider
- You don’t already have trouble swallowing or infection in or near the injection site
- Also, let your provider know about any medications you take since some may be contraindicated
If Kybella® isn’t right for you, your provider may be able to offer other alternative options (CoolSculpting®, other injectables, or a surgical procedure) depending on your goals and overall health.
