Sometimes as we age, we feel like we barely recognize the person we see in the mirror. Everyone has a different experience with how aging affects their face. Some people find their jawline lacks the definition it once had when they were younger. Dermal fillers may be able to restore your jaw definition without surgery.
Allure magazine called it a game changer for people wanting to resculpt, define, or contour the lower part of the face, including the chin and jawline.
Juvederm Volux is the first (and only) FDA-approved injectable dermal filler that adds definition to the jawline. It’s approved for adults over 21 years old to improve moderate to more severe loss of jawline. The primary ingredient in this gel-textured injectable is hyaluronic acid.
While some seek it out to create the look of a more youthful jawline, others, including young adults, seek it out because they always wanted a more chiseled look with a stronger-looking chin.
Today’s Injectable Dermal Fillers
Dermal fillers have several functional cosmetic applications. Their versatility makes dermal fillers a highly sought-after non-surgical cosmetic treatment for both men and women.
As we age, we lose some of the fat in our face; fillers are used to subtly plump up the skin, replace some loss of volume, and fill in specific fine lines. This results in a smoother look. In addition, fillers are sometimes used to subtly sculpt and define areas of the face, including the jawline and the chin.
Brought to you by the makers of Botox®, Juvederm offers a range of six different specialized fillers. These fillers add volume to many areas of the face, including cheeks, lips, and chin, to fill fine lines and the jawline. Each is specifically designed for the needs of that area of the face. According to Juvederm, the options include:
- Voluma XC adds volume for lift and contour in cheeks and also to improve the chin profile.
- Volbella XC and Ultra XC both add plumpness and volume to the lips.
- Vollure XC and Ultra Plus XC smooth the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and folds around the nose and mouth like the nasolabial folds or “laugh lines”.
- Volux XC is a structural gel filler used to help improve jawline definition.
Depending on your aesthetic goals, you can use more than one type of Juvederm’s specialized fillers. For example, someone may opt for Voluma to contour their cheeks and Volux to create a subtle, more chiseled jawline or chin. Another person may combine Volux for structure but fill in their nasolabial folds with Vollure. During your consultation, discuss all options with your provider. Seek injections from a skilled provider who also has a strong sense of facial proportions, symmetry, and aesthetics.
Occasionally people come in wanting to recreate an influencer’s look they saw on TikTok or Instagram. Each face is different, and sometimes the angles used in selfie videos create a skewed sense of proportion.
What to Expect During Your Juvederm Volux Treatment
Before your injection, you will need to schedule a consultation with a skilled provider, like one of our Master Injectors in Cha. During your consultation appointment, share with your provider your desired aesthetic goals, concerns, full medical history, allergies, and any questions you may have. Your provider needs to know everything, including any medications you are currently taking to determine whether you have any known risk factors for rare side effects or contraindications.
For most people, injectables like Juvederm Volux are considered safe, with minimal side effects. The most common side effects include tenderness at the injection site, mild swelling, and possibly mild bruising.
If you are a good candidate, your provider may be able to perform your injections during that same appointment. Be prepared to remove any cosmetics and follow any specific instructions afterward. The injections may take as little as 20 minutes, depending on how many syringes of filler you need to achieve your goal. Your provider may review specific instructions with you while the filler settles. They will probably advise you not to lie down for at least three hours after your injection.
Sometimes people ask whether dermal filler injections hurt. It varies a little depending on the area where you are being injected. For example, lip fillers tend to be a little more ‘sensitive’ due to all the nerve endings there. Other areas are less sensitive, and most people don’t describe it as “painful.” Providers often apply a local numbing cream to the injection site. Most people find it no more painful than any other needle prick. Discuss with your provider your level of pain tolerance to ensure a pleasant experience.
For best results, it is recommended that you avoid drinking alcohol for a few days before your injection and take a break from unnecessary blood-thinning supplements like fish oil to minimize the risk of bruising.
Cosmetic injectables are temporary, meaning you will need more injections in the future to maintain your results. Juvederm Volux typically lasts for 12 to 24 months. There is none of the downtime associated with plastic surgery, but it may take a few days for the filler to settle.
A More Sculpted Jawline Starts With a Consultation
Like any other cosmetic treatment, it all begins with a consultation. Your provider needs to assess whether you are an appropriate candidate, how much filler to use, and the specific injection sites to provide the results you seek safety.
