In the cosmetic industry, there are all kinds of new non-surgical techniques and technologies hitting the market, each of which are designed to help give you better results with less downtime. Two different technologies you may have heard of are CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting®. It’s easy to get these two confused since they are produced by the same company, but the technologies are different and each provides you with varying benefits. For some, you may be looking at CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting® to determine which is right for you to achieve your desired results. However, for others, it may be possible to take advantage of both technologies to achieve those desired results. The non-surgical experts here at The Skin Center By CPS are here to help you not only understand the difference between CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting® but also determine the best course of action to help you reach your desired outcome.
What Is The Difference Between CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®?
While there are a number of differences in how the two treatments are utilized, but the major difference between CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting® is CoolSculpting® targets the fat cells in your body while CoolTone™ targets the muscle cells in your body. Of course, because the fat cells are on top of your muscles, the application and treatment method is slightly different.
It is important to understand that CoolTone™ doesn’t use a freezing method for targeting your muscles. The main reason why “Cool” is in the name is that Allergen, the manufacturer behind it, also makes CoolSculpting®. Essentially, it’s more of a branding tool than anything else. This way, it is easier to remember Tone and Sculpt. If you’re having trouble separating one from the other think of it this way: Tone is to enhance your muscle mass and tone, and to sculpt is to remove fat to slim down the physique of your body, also known as body contouring.
How Does CoolSculpting® Work?
CoolSculpting® is designed to help permanently reduce the number of fat cells in a target area. The procedure will use a freezing method where fat cells are frozen and then die off. This freezing of the fat cells prevents oxygen and blood flow from reaching the cells for an extended period of time. This effectively strangles off all nutrients from reaching the cells which in turn kills off the cells. While not all of the targeted cells will die, a large percentage of the fat cells will eventually be processed out of the body.
CoolSculpting® is a helpful method for targeting stubborn areas of your body where you’re struggling to lose a few pounds regardless of how much you diet and exercise. This method is generally not the best option if you are trying to remove a large amount of fat. Instead, it can be used around the abdominal area, under your arms, around your thighs, and on your buttocks.
After the procedure, it will take several weeks (if not longer) to fully realize the final result. Depending on the results following the first CoolSculpting® session it may be recommended for you to return for secondary sessions. Everyone reacts differently to CoolSculpting® and it is impossible to know exactly how your own body will react until after the first session.
What Is CoolTone™?

CoolTone™, unlike CoolSculpting®, does not use any kind of freezing at all. In fact, it is much different from CoolSculpting®. CoolSculpting® targets the top layer of fat cells that are blocking out your muscles. CoolTone™, on the other hand, uses a process known as magnetic muscle stimulation (or MMS). What this does is send quick bursts of electromagnetic energy into the muscles. This causes the muscles to contract rapidly. If you have ever experienced a random muscle spasm where muscle fibers start to contract without your control this is similar to the experience CoolTone™ provides.
With CoolTone™ by CoolSculpting® you will tighten and tone targeted muscle fibers. It is important to realize that this will not dramatically increase the size of your muscles. In order to increase the size of your muscles, you need to damage the muscle fiber and then build the fiber back up with an increase in protein consumption. CoolTone™ instead will strengthen the muscle fibers. So, while you won’t increase the size of the muscles you will tighten and tone the muscles, which improves the physical shape of the targeted muscles.
CoolTone™ is a good option for when there are areas on your body that you want to tighten and you’re struggling to do this at the gym.
The Benefits Of Using CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting® Together
Because both CoolTone™ and CoolSculpting® target different kinds of tissue within your body it is possible to use the two services together in order to maximize your final result. For example, if you want to have a tighter-looking midsection you can use CoolSculpting® to freeze away some stubborn belly fat while also using CoolTone™ to tighten the abdominal muscles as well. This isn’t for everyone, but by consulting with the non-surgical experts here at The Skin Center by CPS you will have a better understanding of which is right for you and whether you should consider one or both procedures in order to obtain the desired final look.
Keep In Mind When Considering CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®
It is important to keep in mind the limitations of both CoolTone™ vs CoolSculpting®. CoolTone™ is designed to help tighten and tone target muscles. However, it is recommended that you keep up with your CoolTone™ regimen quarterly, so 4 treatments per year to keep the results from the treatment. Just like doing crunches to tighten your abs, if you decide to stop performing your abdominal routine your abs will go away. So, you’ll want to either continue using CoolTone™ or adjust your workout routine accordingly.
CoolSculpting®, on the other hand, does kill off fat cells. However, unless you adjust your diet or burn more calories during the day the lost fat will end up shifting to new areas of the body (if you have 1,500 excess calories consumed every day those calories will need to go somewhere, so even if you don’t have any more fat cells in your lower chin after CoolSculpting® those calories will be diverted to a different area of your body.
