Botox vs Fillers for Your Forehead: Which is right for you?

Forehead wrinkles appear over time and, for many, are the most prevalent of all wrinkles. This is particularly true for anyone who is especially animated in their facial expressions. Yes, you Spock brow! Whether just furrowing your brow, to showing expressions with raised eyebrows, forehead wrinkles typically develop appearing as a series of horizontal lines that run along the forehead, unfortunately, due to the repetitive use of those muscles, forehead lines often appear much earlier than most other wrinkles.

But what can you do about these wrinkles (which range largely in size and depth)? Botox and dermal fillers are possible options to consider, but each provides a different benefit. Which is right for you – Botox vs fillers for forehead?

Botox vs Fillers for Forehead: Which is right for you?

Here is what you need to know about Botox vs fillers for forehead wrinkles.

When Is Botox Used

While both Botox and dermal fillers are injected into your skin, the two are not the same. As the name suggests, a filler is a product injected into the skin to fill a given area. There are fillers to provide you with plumper-looking lips, and there are fillers used to reduce the appearance of deep wrinkles, such as those in the forehead. Botox, on the other hand, is not a “filler.” It does something totally different. Instead of filling in a wrinkle, it relaxes the surrounding muscle tissue, preventing the muscles from flexing, leaving a smoother appearance.

Forehead wrinkles develop over time due to the flexing of muscles in your forehead and furrowing or raising of your eyebrows. This constant squeezing and relaxing of the muscles is what eventually creates forehead wrinkles. Using Botox to relax the muscles, helps prevent the development (or further advancement) of those forehead wrinkles.

By preventing the muscles from flexing, noticeable wrinkles in the forehead may disappear, in other cases, the wrinkles may become less noticeable. The current severity of the forehead wrinkles will determine if Botox injections are able to resolve the situation completely; or if only able to reduce the physical appearance.

Typically, Botox is used in two different manners. The first is to prevent the development of wrinkles. Many opt for Botox as their preventative choice, eliminating the creation of wrinkles, even though there are no obvious signs on the horizon yet. Preventative measures are often the best way to avoid fine lines and wrinkles. It’s always better to prevent now than to try and correct later.

The secondary purpose Botox is used in treating forehead wrinkles, is to keep the lines minimal, more specific, prevent them from ever becoming severe. However, because forehead lines often do become deeper than most other kinds of wrinkles, it may be necessary to use both Botox and dermal fillers. Your skin care professional can expand on this more to help you determine which treatment is right for you.

When Are Fillers Used

Fillers can be used for most fine lines and wrinkles. The fillers will be injected into the target area to fill in the wrinkle when Botox alone is insufficient to correct forehead wrinkles. A dermal filler can be used to fill in the wrinkle.

However, when a dermal filler is used for your forehead, you may also elect to use Botox as well. This way, not only are you filling in the wrinkles, but you are also relaxing the surrounding muscles, which will help prevent wrinkles from further increasing the size and depth.

Another benefit of the dermal filler is that many fillers include ingredients that help encourage the production of additional collagen, thicken layers of skin, thereby reducing forehead wrinkles. While dermal fillers alone do not actually repair the area, they can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles simply by stimulating your body into producing added proteins that the aging process has slowed.
